Introduction to Telehandler

I. Definition of Telehandler

A telehandler is a forklift equipped with an extendable boom, where the forks or attachments are typically mounted. It performs lifting and forklift operations on loads.

As a significant category of aerial work equipment, telehandler have evolved from traditional forklifts. They integrate the telescopic boom structure of mobile cranes with the fork functionality of conventional forklifts, combined with the rapid mobility and material handling capabilities of loaders. Leveraging the boom’s ability to extend higher and reach farther—and enhanced by various attachments—these machines expand operational versatility and range while improving adaptability to diverse worksite conditions.

The forks of a telehandler can operate across obstacles or through openings and perform multi-tiered stacking/destacking in complex scenarios. With excellent forward visibility and reduced requirement for headroom clearance, telehandler are often classified within the rough-terrain forklift category.

II. Characteristics of Telehandler

(1) Flexibility

Telehandler feature a four-wheel drive configuration, three steering modes (front-wheel steering, four-wheel steering, crab steering), and a dual-range gearbox. Their small turning radius enables agile, precise, and efficient operation in confined spaces.

(2) Versatility

Telehandler support diverse long-duration applications. A range of quick-change attachments—including forks, buckets, truss booms, and vertical masts—is available. Instead of purchasing additional equipment, users can enhance productivity, flexibility, and efficiency by deploying compatible attachments on a single machine.

(3) Stability and Safety

Long wheelbase, low center of gravity, front-mounted stabilizing outriggers, auto-locking functions for boom extension/lowering, and a longitudinally centered engine ensure stability on slopes and rugged terrain. Even weight distribution and four-wheel drive improve mobility in mud, rocky areas, sand, and snow. Operators benefit from unobstructed visibility.

III. Applications of Telehandler

By utilizing multiple attachments, telehandler perform varied tasks efficiently, establishing themselves as true multi-functional construction machinery. They are widely deployed in:

Agriculture/livestock

Logistics

Port operations

Aerial work

Trailer transport

Urban infrastructure

Warehouses and industrial/mining sites

They handle lifting, transporting, and stacking materials (e.g., bricks, timber, steel), serving as ideal high-efficiency handling tools for modern industry, construction, and agriculture. Demand continues to grow alongside economic development, driving higher performance requirements.
